The Flashlight application for the iPhone has the most basic of functions. By the press of one (touchscreen) button a light will come on. Its purpose is obvious in that it is meant to provide light where it is dark. Having the light come from your handheld device allows users to see in crevices and other hard to see places better than an overhead light. The application is free so it has no revenue coming in off of purchases. It profits off of advertisements as do many apps. Their edge on the competition is that their function is viewed as a necessity rather than a want. People need light so their application is bound to generate downloads meaning their advertisement spots will be much more sought after than, say, a game. The beauty of their application is that it requires very little maintenance and seldom needs updates because, as previously mentioned, its function is very simplistic.
