I believe that twitter was created as a very simple and quick way to blog and socialize via social media. Twitter only allows the user up to 140 characters so they are forced to keep "tweets" or their posts short. So that instead of having to read through a huge block of text, you can read the tweets quickly and easily wherever you are, especially with the twitter app on smart phones. There is a trending feed on twitter as well which is awesome for huge news or a big event that everyone is talking about.
