I think help tutorials are a necessity. Especially for older generations who did not grow up with all of this technology, and for people looking to do more with a program than just the basic needs. They do work, and my mother and aunt are prime examples of that fact. My mom use to ask me questions all the time on how do simple tasks on the computer I should her this magic website called youtube and told her to type "How to" followed by anything she wanted to learn. She hardly asks for my help on the computer now. I do not think they are substitutes for an obvious design. No one wants to go from a system that they have grown a custom to and get a new software that does not follow any of thats systems rules in terms of design. People should be able to accomplish their basic needs on the software, but then to do more advanced functions they may need to look up tutorials or find help. Also, I think someone will always need the help tutorials, so they are a nice addition to have.
The group that I feel should be focused on is the kids. Mostly because if we are making something for the hero we are likely trying to turn that into a toy to sell for money to the kids. If it is too dangerous of a toy or too dark of a hero then parents may not let the kids watch that show and learn about the toy, or if the kid does watch that show they may not by the toy for him.

ReplyDeleteYou make a good point about older generations who sometimes don't pick up new technologies easily. HELP systems are definitely helpful for this group of people. Just because a technology needs HELP systems does not mean it is not an obvious or good design. Also, like you said, HELP systems are beneficial for the groups of people who like to go more in depth with their technology and explore more than the basic features.
I want to thank you for pointing out kids as a group to consider for the project. As me and my group were working on the project we have always been thinking about people our age who would like to have more things related to the comic or who would like to see different things in our character. remembering that comics are meant for kids will help me to design and think of fun things that our hero may want to use
