The feature that we chose to redesign was the recommended videos section. The user's mental model is that with the addition of categories to search through right on the homepage, they are no longer bothered by lists of videos that are recommended that they may have no interest in, but can now search at their own leisure through shorter lists of related videos. This differs from the programmer model because that type of thought process isn't taken into account. Programmers designed YouTube the way it is to be streamlined and hit users with all recommended videos at once. The hassle of sifting through unappealing recommended videos isn't considered because they design that section with the "average" user in mind, and that user just simply doesn't exist.
